Cape Code Hospital at the age of 88.
Eunice Shriver spent the past 41 years of her life serving individuals with intellectual disabilities through the humanitarian movement of the Special Olympics, which she founded in 1968 and now constitutes around three million athletes from 172 countries. Since its establishment, the movement is known to furnish extensive opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to practice various sports in more than 50000 competitions worldwide on a yearly basis.
It was with deep sadness that a statement was issued by SOMENA on the tremendous loss that the Special Olympics movement must face. Yet, as stronger as its founder wanted it to be, the Special Olympics will continue to encourage and raise individuals with intellectual disabilities – many of whom have suffered years of negligence and lack of care – to the platform of sports champions, thanks to Eunice Shriver’s vision and efforts.
